As our bodies age, we may become a bit more prone to certain diseases, particularly diseases of the colon, stomach, and the rest of the digestive system. You may suddenly become lactose intolerant in spite of never having the problem prior to hitting your 40's or older, increase in indigestion, slower digestion, more gas, and bloating. Unfortunately, these minor disorders can lead to some truly serious, and even life-threatening, diseases.

As the old saying goes, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure..." and as our bodies goes through changes that comes with the aging process we must be willing to make necessary adjustments to make sure we do not need "...a pound of cure."

Regular Ingestion of Probiotics for Intestinal Health

If one does not already consume healthy probiotic foods such as yogurt, kefir, or other types of fermented milk products, it is suggested that daily ingestion of these probiotic foods should become a part of a person's lifestyle and dietary habits. Daily use of probiotic foods helps set up and maintain a healthy digestive tract and prevents the development of tumors, polyps, and even colon cancer.

However, many people find that the taste of many, or even all of these aforementioned fermented milk products, unpalatable and therefore unwilling to ingest the necessary probiotic bacterium the stomach, intestines, and colon needs to keep the internal equipment working smoothly as the body ages. Fortunately, one can now ingest probiotics in the form of easy to swallow supplements, powders, or wafers available at any health food store and at most major department stores.

Biology Works, Probiotics Make It Work Better

Quite a few scientific studies have demonstrated that probiotics provide an overall enhancement to the immune system through a process of regulating the lymphocytes and antibodies in the body's lymphatic system. Use of probiotics helps promote anti-tumor and anti-cancer activity in the body therefore making the consumption of probiotics of major importance to cancer patients and survivors to help heal and prevent the recurrence of cancer cells.

One particular form of cancer that probiotics have been found to have a definite impact on is colon cancer. The increase in colon cancer amongst people in the age group of 40-50 was shown to be highest amongst those who consumed heavy meats, such as beef and pork, on a daily basis and had been doing for all their lives. Most did not consume much in the way of high fiber foods nor were they prone to eating any probiotic foods such as yogurt. However, it was found that the rate of colon cancer decreased exponentially in people who consumed much less meat and more high fiber foods along with daily intake of probiotics either in food or as supplements.
